"The defining moment of my life was when I was seventeen and was honored by Scholastic. Being recognized meant that little pat on the back, that sense of confidence that I could enter a life that I loved, and I had somebody behind me say, “This is OK.”"
Richard Avedon, Photographer, Alumnus of The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards 1941
Regionally, students are honored by winning either Gold Keys, Silver Keys, or Honorable Mentions for their submitted work. Digital images of the Gold Key works will go on to New York to be judged against all of the other Gold Key work from around the country. Results of the National Awards will be released in mid-March. This is Educational Gallery Group's 10th year as the Regional Affiliate for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have been around since 1923, leaving behind an impressive legacy and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, and Joyce Carol Oates. The National Scholastic Art Awards are an important opportunity for students to be recognized for their creative talents. Teens in grades 7-12 can apply in the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published. Last year we received over 2500 entries and exhibited over 500 pieces from students in Palm Beach and Martin County who received a Gold or Silver Key.
